In vast contrast to the recent Victorian Titles, Mornington produced picture perfect days and light (sometimes very light) winds. 25 Opti’s hit the water on Saturday morning and in the first heat and dying breeze only 5 Opti’s could make the finish line. Bad luck to Tom Trotman – it’s always hard when you cross the line first to then have the race abandoned.
After a very long lunch the breeze settled in at a relatively stable 5 knots. Tyrone Gowans had a flyer with two firsts and led the regatta at the end of Day 1. Tyrone is a Mornington member so no doubt felt at home and this was a great result. Another stand out was our best performing Green Fleeter – James Grogan who led the fleet to the top mark on more than one occasion. The racing continued until nearly 7pm at night.
Almost 12 hours later the Opti’s were back on the water for Day 2 with a very early start of 8.50. Four heats were run back to back in again only 5 knots of wind with racing concluding in the early afternoon.
In the end Jack Gravesshowed great consistency with 3 firsts and 2 seconds and took the honors over Tyrone Gowans with Jack Felsenthal taking third over Tom Trottman on a count back. Given Floppsy and Tom T were apparently playing Cods until late on the Saturday night they both did well to keep their eyes open.
Sophie Jackson and Ollie Warrington had standout 13th. Nicholas Sharman held all his scores in the top ten, Lachlan Evenden two fours and a five were outstanding. Sarah Philip and Stan Austin 3 top ten’s, Campbell Rickard’s 2.
Well done to all sailors and thanks to Ivor and Lloyd Collings for their on water assistance and apologies to those I have not thanked.

Junior Sail Auckland Report from Anna Philip

Sail Auckland Regatta
In mid February, Jack Graves, Jack Abbott, Sam Hannah, Tom Trotman and I travelled to New Zealand to sail optimists in Junior Sail Auckland. Most people who sail Opti’s from the North Island in NZ were there. There was about 109 sailors on the one start line in the open fleet and around 45 in the green fleet.
We arrived on Thursday the 11th and met our host families at Kohimarama Yacht Club. My host family arrived first, I was staying with a family of six which was a bit different to my family of four back home. The families who billeted us were all really nice and some even took us sight seeing.
On the Friday morning our families dropped us off at the yacht club, to go sailing, all the New Zealand sailors were at school that day. After we rigged our boats a very kind New Zealand coach let us train with a Russian team he was coaching. We went sailing for the afternoon in a very light shifty breeze, then went home with our families.
The next day, Saturday, was the first day of the regatta the first race was scheduled for 11 am. We sailed 4 races, back to back in a good 18 knots of breeze with gusts up to 25 knots. This was quite a tiring day as we were on the water for a solid six hours. We all had a good day with some great results, a few tipped and Tom Trotman and I unfortunately got an OCS. The second day of the regatta saw light wind which was very shifty with unpredictable gusts. In one of the races there was a bit of wind then suddenly it dropped out to nothing but we kept on racing. We then did two more races and in the last race Sam Hannah got a 1st which was so good.
Tom and I got another OCS on that day as well so that was unfortunate but oh well!
Over all it was an amazing experience, travelling overseas, sailing in such a large fleet and staying with other families, I had a great time.
The overall results were: Sam Hannah-6th and 1st under 12, Jack Graves-21st , Jack Abbott-28th ,Tom Trotman- and Anna Philip- 45th.
Thank you to Peter Osbourne, SSCBC, for organising for us to go to New Zealand and helping us with chartering our boats for us.

2010 Ozi-Opti and Ronstan Victorian State Optimist Championships 27-28 Feb 2010
86 Starters from 20 Yacht Clubs, 39 Open Fleet, 47 Green Fleet, 9 Interstate Visitors from 4 States/Territories.
Congratulations to:
Tom Lidgett of Davey's Bay YC who became 2010 Victorian State Optimist Champion for 2010 at SSCBC over the weekend.
Klaus Lorenz of Whitsunday SC winner of the Open Championship with one point between him and Tom Lidgett.
Campbell Rickard of Albert Park YC who won the Victorian State Optimist Green fleet regatta.
Anna Philip of Sorrento SCBC 1st girl in the Open Fleet.
Conditions were ideal for stronger sailors with predominantly Southerly wind of 20-25 knotts all weekend.
I flew across on Thursday for a 3 hour coaching session with the other 4 world’s team and Riley Dean– who I found to be a great coach. Riley is the NZ world’s coach and knows a lot about North sails as he helped Wilzy design them, which was good for me
It was similar to Adelaide in temperature 39 degrees which by the last day had dropped to 36. I found it hard not to get burnt as the sun was really hot and sun cream seemed not to work. We had researched the weather before we left and I was looking forward to the Fremantle doctor. We were told of the possibility of strong easterlies in the mornings and the doctor in the afternoon
In the end we end all 13 heats were sailed in 15 – 25 knot easterlies which I was told was unusual – before I left I was told easterlies being offshore were a nightmare with 20 – 30 degree shifts and holes. This was true and lifts on one side turned out to be bigger knocks on the way back
We had lunch on the water as it took too long to get back though the big marina to shore . I was the only interstate boat so won first but also last interstater. Bondy organized an Ozi Opti for me and I took all my own gear which just fitted on 23 kg for the flight
I was the only Ozi Opti with most boats XSP or Winner J sails were on almost every boat but a mixture of foils and spars.
In the end I came 8th with the current national champion Nia 2 points ahead and last years National champion Doug 4th. This shows how competitive the fleet is with I believe 15 boats capable of winning heats. I found my boat speed to be equal to most and got up the top mark first a couple of times but my best result was 3rds . I got 8 top six results but then some low teens when I went the wrong side. The West Australians are quick in the strong winds and probably fitter than I was, at least on the last day. I think that the main advantage they have is probably regatta experience , I stayed with Sam Blackburn who has sailed internationally 5 times last year (Venice ,Langkawi ,New Zealand ,Singapore and Slovenia) Most of the top boats had done the same
All the sailors and their families were very friendly and helpful to me and I had a great time!

Any parent who is interested in joining the 2010/11 committee of VIODA needs to have their nomination form signed and delivered as outlined in the attached notice of AGM which was emailed last week!.
It is important that we have broad, experienced and enthusiastic representation on this committee to continue to support Victorian Optimist Dinghy sailing at all levels.
Over the coming weeks we will be working on the VIODA coaching and regatta Calendar for 2010 leading up to the 2011 Nationals in NSW.
VIODA's membership is currently 77 members from 54 families. Attached is a membership form you may like to use to add on new family memberswho have started opti sailing(reduced rate) or new club members who may not have joined up yet. Membership promotes the class and ensures eligibility to enter State and National Optimist Championships, VIODA Coaching Clinics, Voting at AGM and this year Victorian rashies and hats to all Victorian sailors who attended the National Championships in Adelaide.
Victoria had an outstanding participation and success at the IODA Oceania Championship and the International Optimist Australian and Open Championship 2010 held at the Adelaide Sailing Club, West Beach SA.
Congratulations to all sailors. Victoria had the most Australian entrants, the second largest selection to the AOST and the largest spread of ages from the youngest to the eldest.
Thank-you to the Victorian Coaches, Sean Bligh and Ivor McNamarra.
